Judging is carried out in each category by a panel of 3. Each panel comprises a professional in the appropriate field, a Trustee, together with a "lay person" for a rounded view of the projects. All judges are volunteers and receive no payment.

All suitable entries are judged on site. Due to the vast diversity, projects are not judged against each other but purely on their own merits, therefore there is no "best project".

The judges have a wide brief including:

  • Have appropriate materials been used?
  • Is the workmanship of a high standard?
  • Does it fit well into its environment?
  • Does it make the best of the site’s potential?

There are two award categories that are presented to a person rather than a project - the Building Crafts Award is presented to a craftsman/woman or young apprentice for an example of work using traditional skills. The Sussex Heritage Person of the Year Award is presented in recognition of one person’s outstanding commitment to the heritage of Sussex
